National Forest Inventory IFN4 Valuation

The National Forest Inventory (IFN) is the project of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge that provides homogeneous information at a national level on Spanish forests and their evolution, both from a forestry and forest biodiversity point of view. This project is structured over time with a ten-year periodicity (art. 28 of the Forestry Law), and after 60 years of validity, it is finishing its fourth cycle (IFN4), which began in 2008. The valuation cartography associated with IFN4 is provided, comprised of 16 raster layers: The economic valuation in euro cents per hectare of each information provided by each layer and the total result of that valuation are represented. The layers are: economic valuation of food and raw material production, wood production, firewood production, pine nut production, cork production, forest pasture production, water provision, recreational services, hunting, avoided sedimentation in reservoirs, carbon capture, carbon capture by trees, carbon capture by scrubland, conservation of biological diversity, total economic valuation without water and total economic valuation.

Lineage statement

The economic valuation of the services provided by the forest environment allows us to quantify, in monetary terms, the increase in well-being that society experiences thanks to them. The methodology applied has been designed with a prudent approach, so the results obtained must be interpreted as the minimum value of natural resources. The methodology designed within the framework of the project “Valuation of natural assets in Spain” (VANE), prepared by the Ministry of the Environment, and Rural and Marine Environment, has been used as a basic reference for the valuation. In accordance with this methodology, environmental services are identified and grouped into a series of relatively homogeneous aspects. Thus, 13 environmental services are valued specifically, which are aggregated into 7 different aspects.
